Festival of Ashura

Muharram if the first month of the year. The 10th of Muharram is the Festival of Ashura. This was originally the Jewish festival of Passover and its theme is still the celebration of the escape of the Israelites from Egypt. This is also celebrated as the day when Noah's ark touched ground and he stepped on to dry land again. Muslims fast for two days before Ashura. In Shi'a Islam, Ashura is also the celebration of the Martyrdom of Ali, when young men in subject themselves to extreme physical testing.
